One comes from Professor Yi Ji-ho of Jinju National University of Education, and the other from Professor Jeong Seong-gi of Gyeongnam University. When 256 students boycotted Yi Ji-ho��s class, he flunked them all. School authorities, who were not ready for something like that to happen, decided that the same class would be taught again during vacation. Yi says he is going to maintain his principles, and is fighting school administrators by petitioning the Ministry of Education and Human Resources Development, saying the school is encroaching on his authority as a professor.
In an interview with the Chosun Ilbo,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Jeong Seong-gi issues a "confession,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," acknowledging that his theories from the eighties were wrong,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and says the fact that students were misled is something that has to be exposed. They were "misled" to believe that Korean society was a "subordinate monopoly capitalist system,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," according to the Marxist interpretations of social construction. This theory had it that because of the system, Korean society would only get worse. But as we entered the eighties it was Soviet Communism that ended up collapsing, not Korean capitalism. The intellectuals who "saw things wrong" are not confessing this, and have generally avoided facing up to the truth. Compared to most,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Jeong Seong-gi is very honest,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], as a scholar and as an educator.
Both cases raise serious questions about the Korean academic community and how barren it can be. The students who received failing grades in Yi Ji-ho's class certainly did not do anything especially amoral. Students with middle and high school teaching certificates had suddenly been turned into elementary school teachers,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], so of course they were angry. All Yi wants to do, however, is maintain some important principles. In the case of Jeong Seong-gi as well; there are certainly academics among those who do not "confess" their pasts who actually do not need to. Either way, actions of these two professors cry out for debate, and it should lead to ample discussion for the sake of a healthy future for Korea��s intellectual community.
What we need to consider is the how intellectuals need to maintain their own independent voices of conscience, and not turn into spokespeople for ruling cliques. They each certainly have some of their own ideas, but lately have either been swept away by the fashion of the times, feel somehow daunted by the situation, or are just trying to not say anything at all. What you hear from them these days are standardized slogans from the ruling clique. It is why Yi Ji-ho and Jeong Seong-gi stand out. One would hope that in the future there will be more academics who have the courage to speak according to their own consciences.
Something else we need to think about is whether or not Korea��s intellectuals have caught some of the populist winds in the air these days,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and that instead speaking with refined academic language,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], they are going overboard with abusive denunciations and rude wordage. Perhaps this is why Jeong Seong-gi says "the taking of sides is getting serious.....the humanity of people in academia has become desolate as a result." Instead of leading the way in the healing of the wounds of regional and class conflict, they have made it worse than it was. The total vulgarization of cultural and human qualities among both the elite and the masses make it clear that our society is truly in a state of crisis.
In addition, it is time for Korean academics to stop the practice of saying what has to be said because they are scared of offending someone they have become indebted to along the way. It is right and proper to show respect for those who suffered under the dictatorships. But by now,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], their immunity from the kind of criticism that would help improve our society has expired at this point. The unwritten law that because someone had righteous motivation,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], or because their theory is righteous in its approach they should not be criticized because doing so puts you in bed with the enemy,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], is no longer valid. There has to be a fundamental change of atmosphere. Will we never see truly lonely intellectuals like Spinoza? One hopes that there would be a new mood of openness.
